The DPJ can win a majority<http://www.japaninc.com/The_DPJ_can_win_a_majority>
... but what will that mean?

By Tobias Harris

Having tabulated the predictions made over the course of
my election handbook<http://www.observingjapan.com/search/label/2009%20election%20handbook>,
I think it's appropriate that I return
and answer my initial question.

Can the DPJ win an absolute majority?

Saving the Earth from global warming... sorry,
what?<http://www.japaninc.com/Saving_the_Earth_from_Global_Warming>

By Flavio Souza

Since its formation, the Earth has gone through many
transformations, from its atmosphere (once made by methane,
among other compounds) to its geography. Therefore, it is
very audacious and pretentious that we (humans) would have
the power to destroy our own planet...

Strong yen the new norm? <http://www.japaninc.com/Strong_yen_the_new_norm>

By Steven Towns

Interesting developments in the Nikkei ahead of the parliamentary
election at the end of this month, which at this point looks as if it
will finally bring an end to LDP rule. A foreign exchange rate of
$1/¥94 would have been practically inconceivable prior to the
“Lehman shock” (as the Japanese refer to the genesis of the
financial crisis), let alone a stock market rally. And now, ahead of
what appears to be a DPJ that will let the yen appreciate and focus
more on domestic demand (rightfully so), the stock indices are
showing no fear of the yen...

The politics of happiness <http://www.japaninc.com/node/4237>

By Hugh Ashton

I’ve been seeing posters and hearing speeches from the Happiness
Realization Party (Kōfuku Jitsugen-tō) for some time now. Hardly
surprising, when you consider that they have entered a candidate
for every first-past-the-post constituency seat, as well as a number
for the proportional seats...

Hatoyama is a problem for the
DPJ<http://www.japaninc.com/Hatoyama_is_a_problem_for_the%20DPJ>

By Tobias Harris

In the current issue of the Economist, the news magazine calls
particular attention to comments by Yukio Hatoyama in an article in
the September issue of Voice called "My Political Philosophy."
Hatoyama, the Economist notes, "railed against American-led 'market
fundamentalism' that, he said, the LDP had embraced since Mr Koizumi’s
leadership. But his alternative is a mushy-sounding concept, yuai, that
mixes up the Chinese characters for friendship and love." The magazine
also notes that Aso too has spoken of market fundamentalism...
