valuable language, as the stock market soared from ¥6,000 to ¥39,000,<br>
and PE multiples ballooned from 10 to 100, landing me a job at Morgan<br>
Stanley. A friend who delivered sandwiches for a living was even able<br>
to land a job at a special bracket firm because he had a reasonable<br>
fluency in this impossible to learn, 5,000-year-old language. But<br>
languages rise and fall, as do civilizations, and I’m afraid that my<br>
language skills are getting downgraded to the relevance of Vulgar<br>

In 1991, Sakamoto-san left his career in selling used pianos<br>
to establish BOOKOFF Corporation Limited., which has grown<br>
into Japan's largest used bookstore with over 1000 locations.<br>
Like most great business ideas, Sakamoto-san's idea for BOOKOFF<br>
was extremely simple; sell used books in a clean, organized,<br>
well-lit environment with well-trained and friendly employees.<br>
The revenue model was equally simple but highly profitable;<br>
buy used books at 10% of the list price and sell them for 50%<br>
of the list price and if for some reason the book does not<br>
sell for 3 months the book is sold for 100 yen.<br>

With over 60 billion yen in annual sales, 4000+ staff,<br>
and over 1000 BOOKOFF locations in Japan and abroad that<br>
simple model seems to have worked very well.<br>
BOOKOFF also diversified into several sub-brands such as used<br>
