Northeast Ohio is anchored by Cleveland with the subsidiary major metros of
Akron-Canton and Youngstown. The region has become a global hub for
biomedical business and one of the world’s foremost research locations. Home
to the Cleveland Clinic, the region's bioscience industry is growing on
average by 7.4% annually and today is home to more than 600 biomedical
businesses. Other strengths of the region lie in advanced manufacturing,
polymers and aerospace. Cleveland itself is home to three professional
sports teams -- The Cleveland Cavaliers, The Cleveland Browns, and The
Cleveland Indians -- and the Northeast Ohio region also has numerous arts

In this section we usually introduce an Ohio company looking to promote its
products in Japan but this month, we would like to introduce one of Ohio's
"key" industries: Advanced Energy & Environmental Technologies.

２００８年５月、オハイオ州のテッド・ストリックランド州知事が新エネルギーに関する特別措置法（AEPS)に調印しました。これは２０２５年までに電力消費の最低２５％（かつ、そのうち１２．５％以上を再利用可能エネルギーで）を新エネルギーにて賄うという法律です。このAEPSは何千もの雇用を産み、またソーラー、風力、バイオマス、燃料電池、水力といった様々な新エネルギー関連産業の成長を加速しました。ファーストソーラーやザンライトといったオハイオ州をベースにする企業は現在、太陽光発電業界の最先端を担い、また風力発電業界においては同州はその強力な生産力を生かし米国における主たる生産拠点となっています。

*Ohio's Key Industries: Advanced Energy and Environmental Technologies*

In May 2008, Ohio Governor Ted Strickland signed into law an Advanced Energy
Portfolio Standard (AEPS) that requires at least 25% of new electricity sold
in Ohio to be generated from advanced energy technology by 2025 - with a
minimum of 12.5% from renewable energy resources. The AEPS has helped create
thousands of jobs and enabled growth of the advanced and renewable energy
industry which encompasses solar, wind, biomass, fuel cells,
hydroelectricity. Ohio companies such as First Solar and Xunlight have
developed into world leaders in the solar industry, and the state has
utilized its strong manufacturing base to become a leading supplier for the
US wind industry.
